Chess team kicks off 2017-18 season on Nov. 6
The MMS Chess Team kicks off the 2017-18 season today! Our lower elementary group will be meeting on Mondays and the upper elementary/middle school group will be meeting on Tuesdays.
Chess supports many of our goals at MMS, lengthening a child’s window of concentration, building up the ability to plan and sequence actions, and encouraging patience. It is a surprisingly social sport, and one that is applicable to all age groups.
We take part in local West Virginia Scholastic Chess League (WVSCA) tournaments and practice our skills with weekly practices. It is not required to attend tournaments, and students may still participate in weekly practice. To participate in tournaments, you will need to sign up for a USCF ID at https://secure2.uschess.org/webstore/member.php
The tournaments begin soon (mid-November), so you will want to do this quickly!
Chess club is open to all lower elementary, upper elementary and middle school students, regardless of skill level. Unskilled players will be taught, and we will have student helpers there to work one-on-one with new players. Practice will begin November 6. Each group’s size will be limited to 14 students, with preference given to returning players. The groups will fill up quickly, so please let me know if you are interested.
Lower elementary lessons are 45 minutes (3:15-4:00 p.m. Mondays) and upper elementary/middle school lessons are 1 hour (3:15-4:15 p.m. Tuesdays).
Please contact Coach Jason Winesburg (firstname.lastname@example.org) as soon as possible if you are interested in joining the team.
