A community of learners

MMS is not only your child’s school, it’s your school too!  We offer many avenues for families to connect with teachers and other parents to strengthen their child’s educational experience and create a supportive and caring school community.

Parent Education

Classroom and school-wide events addressing education, parenting and school issues and activities are held throughout the year.  Parents are strongly encouraged to attend and participate to gain understanding of their child’s education and the Montessori method and connect with faculty and other parents.

MMS Parent University, one of our newest programs, provides expanded opportunities for our school community and the public to learn about Montessori education, child development, parenting and other issues of interest to parents and educators.

Montessori educates the “whole child,” and part of that involves educating the whole family.

“Parent education and involvement is an important component of our total education experience,” says MMS Director Jennifer Carriger. “The Montessori approach differs from traditional education in many key areas, and giving parents insight into the philosophy and method can help them apply Montessori principles at home and optimize their child’s success in the classroom.”

Bailey cThe Mountaineer Montessori School Parent Organization plays an important role at MMS, offering educational and social activities for parents and students during the school year and throughout the summer.  Parents Night Out, “Montessori Meet-Ups” and other events give both parents and students the chance to learn and have fun the Montessori way. The MMSPO also coordinates room parents and volunteers.

Gazette MapThe involvement of parents and community friends turns a school into a family.  Your skills and talents can make a meaningful difference to your child’s educational experience and to the future of MMS. No matter your background, whether you can give an hour or a year, your help is welcomed and valued. Over the past four decades, volunteers have designed and built our playground; provided pro bono legal, marketing, accounting and other professional services;  participated in read aloud; built cabinetry and equipment; upgraded our electrical system; installed computers; provided meals for faculty; organized field trips and parties; helped with office administration; brought the Trout in the Classroom program to MMS; painted and cleaned classrooms; introduced “Calculus Without Tears” to elementary students; helped map the Carriage Trail; chaired major fundraisers; and that just scratches the surface!

To offer your help, please call the MMS office at 304/342-7870.
