Strong roots, a bright future

Fifty years ago, a small group of community members shared a big dream: education centered around the child, not the other way around.

With this simple, but powerful, vision, they created a sanctuary of learning that grew from a single Primary classroom into today’s Mountaineer Montessori School, which is now honored to serve nearly 200 children ages 2-14.

Over the decades, MMS has remained firmly rooted in the values of excellence and community that forged our beginning while continually evolving and innovating to meet the promise of the future.

We’re stepping boldly into tomorrow by completing the final steps toward AMS Accreditation, a major milestone that reflects our unwavering commitment to the highest standards in Montessori education; in expanding our after school programming; and most importantly, in continuing to increase our investment in the heart of in our community--students and teachers-- through financial aid and professional development.

The partnership of families, friends and community partners transformed our founders’ dream into a bright reality and that support remains essential to sustaining the vision of an education that celebrates the unique potential, talents and spirit of each child. "Rooted in the Future," the 2025 MMS Annual Appeal, provides essential funding to ensure this legacy for today’s students and beyond.

Positively Montessori-MMS launches elevated Positive Discipline curriculum and practice

Positive Discipline has long been a foundational practice for realizing Maria Montessori's vision for peace education within our classrooms and entire school community at MMS.

Positive Discipline aligns with the Montessori philosophy by promoting mutual respect, cooperation, and intrinsic motivation. Instead of using rewards or punishments, it supports teachers in guiding students toward responsible decision-making and self-discipline. The approach emphasizes effective conflict resolution and the development of self-awareness. Grounded in research, it equips educators with practical tools to create a positive and peaceful classroom community where students feel connected, capable, and motivated to learn and grow.

Now, as part of our commitment to Continuous School Improvement , we're expanding and enhancing our Positive Discipline approach through curriculum alignment and articulated outcomes and strengthened training for staff and families (see details on upcoming Family Education events next week below).

Hope Scholarship deadlines approaching

Mountaineer Montessori School is pleased to be an approved WV Hope Scholarship School. The scholarship allows qualifying K-12 students to receive financial assistance that can be used for private school tuition and other approved expenses. The latest newsletter from the West Virginia Treasurer's Office outlines upcoming deadlines to qualify for Hope in 2025-26; the application portal opens for returning Hope students on January 5, while new students can begin applying on March 1. We encourage all families to keep themselves informed and plan ahead for the next school year!

Eight weeks of awesome with MMS

Campessori, Mountaineer Montessori's signature summer program, returns this year with eight weeks of awesome.

Enriching programming for Primary and Elementary students will be offered June 10-August 2 at our beautiful Staunton campus. Register now.

Children should register for the class they will be attending in the fall. Primary campers must be age 3 and must be independent with toileting at the time Campessori begins. Our summer program is a wonderful opportunity for new students and those rising to a new level to experience what's ahead in the upcoming school year.

Camp hours:

Primary Half Day (ages 3, 4, and 5): 8:00-11:45 a.m.
Primary Full Day (ages 3, 4, and 5): 8:00 a.m.-2:45 p.m.
Elementary: 8:00 a.m.-2:45 p.m.

A new, fun twist for Elementary Campessori... Our Elementary camps will include two themes per week! Students will be in two groups, based on age, and each group will spend half the day with each lead teacher, transitioning at lunchtime to the other lead teacher/theme.

Early Bird Pricing: Valid through April 12

Primary Half Day: $200 per week
Primary Full Day: $300 per week
Elementary: $250 per week

MMS presents free toilet learning workshop on November 2

Ready to ditch the diapers?

Are you ready to ditch the diapers but not sure where to start?

To help parents of infants and toddlers prepare and support their children through the transition to bathroom independence, Mountaineer Montessori School (MMS) will present a free "Toilet Learning 101" session on Thursday, Nov. 2, 5:30-6:15 p.m., at 308 20th Street.

The class will be led by Samantha Van Den Berghe-Lynch, a parent, experienced and certified Montessori educator, and Lead Guide for the MMS Toddler Program. Advanced registration is required. Space is limited.

The session will highlight the Montessori approach to toileting, which brings a unique emphasis on "learning" rather than "training." Toilet learning is a gradual, but purposeful, sequence that helps young children to be involved in the process through self care leading towards independence.

This process is built upon the "sensitive period" for toileting (generally between 18-24 months), habit training and procedures of self care, all of which build confidence and competence. While requiring patience and consistency, guiding children through a gradual sequence of developmentally-appropriate skill building activities can support success and minimize frustration for everyone in the family.

Founded in 1976, MMS is West Virginia's original Montessori school, serving 180 children ages 2-8th grade on campuses at 4801 Staunton Avenue, SE, in Kanawha City, and 308 20th Street in the University of Charleston neighborhood.

MMS Named AMS Accreditation Candidate School

The 'gold standard' of Montessori school excellence

Mountaineer Montessori School, 4801 Staunton Avenue, is pleased to announce that it has earned the distinction of "American Montessori Society School Accreditation Candidate."

MMS was recently notified that it has been officially accepted into the accreditation program, a process that provides guidance, empowerment, and high ideals to help schools implement and sustain the rigorous standards of quality Montessori education.

Accreditation by the American Montessori Society is the "gold standard" of Montessori school excellence—the highest level of recognition a Montessori school can achieve. Currently, about 15 percent of member schools are AMS-accredited.

AMS is recognized by the National Council for Private School Accreditation, a national organization that serves as a review panel for the standards and review procedures of private-school accrediting agencies. Every school that is accredited by AMS gains automatic recognition by NCPSA.

“We are proud to have achieved this milestone,” said MMS Director Jennifer Carriger.

“It is a testament to our 47 years of experience in providing high-quality education to the community and several years of hard work by our staff and Board of Directors focused on the AMS Continuous School Improvement Process, including curriculum alignment and specialized training. We look forward to working with on-site visitation teams as we take our school to the next level with strategy planning and a plan of self study, the next phase of accreditation. It’s all focused on providing the best Montessori education possible for our students.

"The accreditation process to date has been challenging and rewarding," Carriger noted.

Working with rigorous accreditation standards established by foremost Montessori educators from around the world, MMS teachers, administrators and board members are examining every facet of MMS educational programming, policies and operations to implement protocols that ensure alignment with the best practices for quality, ethics and sound management.

Through the accreditation process, schools make significant discoveries about their programs including strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement. Participants model the Montessori ideal of a lifelong learner—one who voluntarily engages in self-reflection, ongoing pursuit of knowledge, and improvement.

Founded in 1976, MMS is West Virginia’s original Montessori school. When the accreditation process is complete, it will be the first and only fully accredited Montessori school in the state. MMS provides an expansive academic and arts curriculum to nearly 180 students ages 2-8th grade at campuses at 4801 Staunton Avenue in Kanawha City and 308th Street in the University of Charleston neighborhood. MMS pioneered Montessori education at every level in West Virginia, introducing the first AMS Montessori Toddler, Primary, Elementary and Adolescent (Middle School) programs to the state’s children.

While some events have a contact person listed, no RSVPs are needed unless noted...just show up and hang out with your Montessori friends...wear your "M" shirts and look for others wearing their MMS colors!

For larger public events, you may wish to connect with classmates and friends in advance to arrange a specific meeting time/place.

Rise to the occasion for education!

Since our founding in 1976, more than 1,000 children have gotten their start at Mountaineer Montessori.

The love of learning ignited during their time here has propelled these students to go far and aim high. No matter where their paths lead, the Montessori magic continues to empower their potential and inspire a bright future for themselves, their communities and our world.

On Saturday, June 3, we will present "The Journey of a Lifetime Starts Here," our annual spring gala. The event is a major fundraiser providing essential funding for teacher training and appreciation, facilities, and financial aid--more than $72,000 in tuition grants and scholarships to Charleston families in 2022-23.

The evening will feature entertainment by Vinyl Village, Minor Swing and Sonji Byers-Baldwin; passed hors d’oeuvres, wine, beer and non-alcoholic beverages; and auctions of student art works and other exclusive prizes, hosted by Jim Strawn, master of ceremonies.

Preparing for the first day of school

Preparing the little ones for that big first day

In a few short weeks, thousands of West Virginia children will be going to school for the very first time.

Whether it’s their first day of kindergarten or stepping into a new preschool environment, it’s a big transition and an exciting time for littlest learners—and their families.

As parents and educators, we’ve learned that planning ahead can help everyone get a new school year off to a successful start. Here are a few ways you can prepare your first-time student for the big day:

Work with your child to practice using school items ahead of time—opening and closing lunch containers, fastening new shoes, zipping and unzipping backpacks, etc. While there is always a teacher nearby to support, exposure to navigating these activities now will build your child’s confidence and skill.
Take a trip (or a few!) to your child’s new school before it opens. If there will be a car line, explain how that will work and even practice getting in and out of the car at the school.
Show your child a picture of their teachers, if possible, teach them their teachers’ names and let them know that the teachers will be there to help them grow and learn. Assure your child that they can ask their teacher if they need help with anything.
Begin transition now to the school clock, adjusting bedtime, morning time, lunch, snacks, and naps (preschool) to what your child will experience once school starts.
Create a morning routine that is cushioned with plenty of time so that it doesn’t cause anxiety that your child may associate with school.
Be positive even if you anticipate that your child may have a hard time. If your child communicates fear/sadness/anxiety, etc., acknowledge it with a simple “hmm” or “I hear you.” Your child picks up on your cues! The more confident you are, the more confident they will be (and you can cry after they get out of the car).

With a little practice and patience, your child can begin the school year excited and ready to learn!

As a growing number of families seek child-centered education alternatives, Montessori schools—public and private –are expanding to meet the need. There are an estimated 5,000 Montessori schools in the United States, about 500 of which are operated in the public sector as district, magnet or charter schools.

And with the growth of Montessori has come new education employment opportunities for teachers in traditional schools and those in other fields who may be interested in a meaningful career change.

West Virginia’s original Montessori school, Mountaineer Montessori, is holding a two-part “career fair” to introduce Montessori principles and its school to individuals who want to learn more about the education method based on the scientific work of Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician.

“It’s the way education is supposed to be.” That’s how some teachers describe working in a Montessori classroom, where learning is student-led and adults serve as a guide to support children to take their interests and abilities as far as they can.

The career fair will include a virtual presentation on Tuesday, March 8, at 6:30 p.m., followed by in-person classroom tours at 9 a.m. on Saturday, March 12, at 4801 Staunton Avenue.

RVSP is required and space is limited. Tours are for adults only and participation in the Zoom presentation is required for tour admission.

Mountaineer Montessori School (MMS) has experienced significant growth in recent years, with enrollment more than doubling in the past decade and new programs and facilities opened to meet the demand. Founded in 1976, MMS serves 180 children ages 2-eighth grade, and anticipates upwards of 200 students next year. The school moved to the former St. Agnes campus at 4801 Staunton Avenue in August to accommodate increased enrollment and started a toddler classroom this year at its former location at 308 20 ^th Street.

“Families come to us looking for high-quality education options in an environment that respects their children as individuals and nurtures them as a whole child,” said MMS Director Jennifer Carriger. “Our programs foster each child’s intellectual, social and emotional growth at every stage of development and inspire a lifetime love of learning.

“The career fair is designed to encourage those from all backgrounds to look at Montessori as a career possibility. There are potential opportunities in the classroom, administration and specialty areas, both full and part time” she said.

“We love sharing the Montessori story with the community,” Carriger added.

MMS offers an expansive academic and arts curriculum that meets and exceed state standards. Children work in multi-age, developmentally-based cohorts in carefully prepared classroom environments that have been described as “laboratories of learning.” The classroom experience is enriched with music, art, physical education, Spanish, STEM, peace education, entrepreneurship and summer learning opportunities, as well as a learning support program. Learning goes beyond the classroom and into the school’s four-acre campus greenspace, the community and throughout the state.

MMS is an independent, non-profit school governed by an elected board of directors comprised of parent, faculty and community representatives. Expenses are funded through tuition, fundraising, grants and partnerships. Financial aid is available and the school offers more than $50,000 in tuition grants and scholarships to area families each year.

What makes MMS special to you?

I love the sense of community and the love for our environment.

What is the best part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is working with the students. It’s rewarding to be a part of their learning development.

Any favorite “Montessori Moments” from your time here?

One of my favorite moments was performing for the MMS Gala. I am in awe of the talent that lies within the school community. I hope to perform with Alasha Al-Qudwah and Ray Singleton in the future.

Sonji, you worked at the St. Agnes School for many years. How does it feel to see the building still in use and full of children?

I think working in my old stomping grounds helped me with this transition. Saint Agnes will always be dear to my heart. I am looking forward to creating new memories in this school. The campus here is so beautiful. I’m glad I can witness the joy it brings to the children. The staff has created a warm and beautiful environment for the students to enjoy. I’m also glad that two of my Saint Agnes friends, John Elswick and Sara Lloyd, are here to enjoy it, as well.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “Creating the Future, One Child at a Time.” What are your hopes for your students’ future?

I hope that the children in our class remember that Tara (Fought) and I want the best for them. We will do our best to make sure beautiful memories and great learning experiences were developed here. I would love for them to look back and say, ‘Mountaineer Montessori teachers gave me the foundation to excel in my education–and life.’”

Tell us about your life outside of school:

Singing is one of my many passions. I started my musical background singing in our church choir. When I started middle school I performed for All-State and All-County Chorus. In high school, I was in the show choir at Dunbar Senior High School. I was picked for Who’s Who in American Music my senior year of high school. I was also named soloist of the year. In my adulthood, I’ve sung at CBGB’s in New York. The world-famous Roxy, and Club Cheetah (Jay-Z’s), and various venues in New York. I also had the pleasure of singing the National Anthem on ESPN. I can say I’ve had a blessed life. My husband and family are my biggest fans. I have three talented children that blessed me with my beautiful grandchildren. Being a grandmother is my favorite title so far.

Any other things you wish to share?

I want to thank Tara and Jennifer Carriger for giving me the opportunity to work here. I had no prior knowledge of Montessori education. I’ve learned so much from Tara and my coworkers. They welcomed me with open arms and for that, I will be forever grateful. Thank you for choosing me to be a part of the campaign this year.

What makes MMS special to you?

I like how each person can learn at their own pace, which is different from traditional schools that give all students the same work and a deadline. Montessori tailors its education to each student. Some of my favorite memories are working with my friends on projects like the egg drop. Another experience I enjoyed was a trip to Spruce Knob where we camped outside and learned life skills, like how to make a campfire and how to find your way back with a compass.

Nasrin, why did you choose MMS for your child?

Danny is the youngest of my three children. My oldest son, Amer, and my daughter, Sarah, both attended public school growing up. When I’d ask Amer or Sarah what they learned in school, they were often uninterested and didn’t have anything exciting to talk about. I felt like their schools didn’t challenge them enough and that their curriculum should have more real-world applications. Additionally, Amer and Sarah learn at different paces and different interests, which I left like could have been explored and developed more if they had an opportunity to pursue it.

I chose Montessori because the curriculum challenges students and allows them to experiment and engage with subjects in a unique way. My favorite thing about the school is how students learn, how they have a say in what they learn, which allows them to feel invested in their education and their future.

Nasrin, the theme of this year’s campaign is “Creating the future, one child at a time. What are your hopes for Danny’s future?

I hope that he finds what he is passionate about and that he happy and confident in himself as he pursues his dreams. I would like him to explore and try different things, making mistakes along the way, and learn from them. I’d want him to have a positive mindset about his future, to be optimistic and reach for the stars, but also realistic and grounded. Most importantly, I would want him to understand that they key to success is knowledge, and that there is always more to learn and experience. I see MMS being the institution that teaches him how to pursue his interests as well as how to make meaningful friendships and connections with those around him.

Why did you choose MMS for your family?

The focus on education early in life is what drew us to MMS. We initially chose this school because they “teach to the child,” so we knew they would support our daughter’s desire to learn at a young age.

Abigail, Isaiah, what do you like best about your school?

Abigail: The open work periods that allow me to chose what I work I do each day at my own speed.

Isaiah: I like that I’m taught how to do things myself and that I can do lessons my own way.

What makes MMS special or different to you?

Abigail: That there are three grades in each class so that each grade can help each other with their work.

Do you have any special “Montessori moments”/favorite memories?

Abigail: There’s a tree in the field and my favorite memory is being able to climb it with my friends.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “Creating the Future, One Child at a Time.” What are your hopes for your children’s future and how do you see MMS playing a role in influencing tomorrow, for them?

I think every parent wants to see their child learn and be successful. With Montessori, you can see a foundation being built that prepares your children for life long success. Tenets of respect, responsibility, independence, self motivation, and leadership will shape their lives forever. We couldn’t ask for anything more.

What would you say to families considering MMS for their children?

From “Grace and Courtesy” to teaching independence, MMS embraces even the youngest of learners. The freedom of choice allowing children to chose their own work empowers them with a sense of responsibility by making their own weekly lesson plans. The mixed age classroom allows older children to mentor and teach which solidifies concepts and encourages leadership, while allowing younger children to learn early on how to work in teams of their peers. And the hands-on learning acknowledges the active nature of children while modeling real world scenarios in which multiple concepts are learned simultaneously. The “unwritten curriculum” of the Montessori Method shows that the process of learning is just as important as the material itself.

How many kids get certified in CPR at age 10? Or get to hike the Grand Canyon on a field trip? The experiences, friendships, and lessons learned at MMS continue to impact me to this day and I am so grateful I had the opportunity to attend Montessori. Some of my most fond memories growing up are from my days at Montessori. I was lucky enough to go there from age 3 until 11. I used to beg the director to expand the school so I could stay until college.

I’m very much a visual learner and the hands-on methods utilized at MMS truly helped me learn the lessons being taught. I remember once I was struggling to understand an English lesson and went to my friend, Mira, to ask for help. She explained the lesson to me so clearly, only the way another child could. MMS gave us the freedom to learn from our peers, not just the teachers. When learning about cube roots I would build the cube and deconstruct it to find the root. When I was in junior high (in public school) and learning these concepts again in the traditional manner I would tap into my memories of Montessori to understand the lessons.

In college, I took the exact same music course as I did at Montessori and again was able to use the MMS lessons for that class. To this day I feel like my brain applies the MMS concepts and learning style to learn medicine.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that so many of my MMS classmates have excelled in life both professionally and personally. My classmates are now physicians, scientists, climate activists, entrepreneurs, lawyers, musicians, educators, and so many others have fantastic and interesting careers. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that when people are asked what my strongest trait is they say I am loyal. MMS taught us to respect our fellow man, work as a team, and lift up those in need. These are lessons you can’t learn from a textbook but must experience as part of a culture.

Now that I have a child of my own, I am even more grateful for MMS and the lessons of respect, creativity, and love of learning that was imparted on me. I hope I can pass on the MMS way to my son and help open his mind to be a strong, independent thinker who also has compassion for his fellow citizens.

PUTTING MONTESSORI VALUES INTO PRACTICE

CHARLESTON, W.Va., Nov. 15, 2021 — Mountaineer Montessori School (MMS) had some special visitors—and a big surprise today—when West Virginia Governor Jim Justice delivered a check for $50,000 to Director Jennifer Carriger as part of a state-wide “ I Got Vaxxed “ Competition.

MMS was one of four elementary school winners, and the only private elementary school, in this phase of the competition, which was created by the Governor to encourage eligible school-aged children, faculty, and staff to get a COVID-19 vaccine.

Mountaineer Montessori is an independent, non-sectarian, non-profit school serving 178 students ages 2-14. Its main campus is located at 4801 Staunton Avenue, SE, in Kanawha City (former St. Agnes School). Founded in 1976, MMS is the state’s original and largest Montessori school.

Through the “I Got Vaxxed” competition, a total of 12 West Virginia public and private schools – four elementary schools, four middle schools, and four high schools – with the largest percentage of eligible vaccinated staff and students will each win $50,000 to use for activities or initiatives to will improve the student experience.

MMS will use its award winnings to help fund technology upgrades at the school, including a large projector screen and speakers so that presentations from guest speakers can be viewed in the classroom. The funds will also be used to create and enhance outdoor learning, playing and eating areas around the new campus in Kanawha City, enabling students to spend more time outdoors during the school day and in the after school and summer programs.

A total of 77 public and private schools entered the competition, and all submitted vaccination data was verified by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources to identify the winners. At least one winning school in each category is a private school. Schools were required to submit entries by Oct. 8.

The Governor was joined by his English bulldog, Babydog, at the event. Babydog was a hit with the students, and enjoyed homemade dog treats made by the seventh- and eighth-grade class.

The Governor was greeted at the announcement with a performance of “The West Virginia Hills” by Middle School student Ellie Hoblitzell on the violin and MMS teacher Alasha Al-Qudwah on the guitar. All MMS students gathered on the school lawn to sing “Country Roads” to the Governor and Babydog as they departed the campus.

“We are thrilled and honored to be a winner in this competition,” said MMS Director Jennifer Carriger. “It reflects the dedication and commitment of our students, teachers and parents to keeping our school and community safe over the past 20 months. We are very grateful to Governor Justice for encouraging schools to do their part to stop of the spread of COVID-19. With these winnings, we can enhance education inside our building and keep our children learning and playing outside for longer periods of the day and after school.”

As part of the Montessori peace curriculum, children learn to take care of themselves and each other, their classrooms and the community right from the start.

“Our entire school family embraced the opportunity to put Montessori values into practice by wearing masks, following social distancing guidelines, participating in testing and getting vaccinated when eligible,” said Carriger. “This award is a testament to those values.”

“As an MMS parent, I am thankful for the leadership and support of Jennifer and our staff, our Board of Directors and the MMS COVID-19 Task Force, which helped us stay strong and stay together throughout the pandemic,” said MMS Board President Clifton Clark. “Working together, we have been able to minimize disruptions, stay true to Montessori learning, and promote health and safety for all.”

Since March 2020, MMS has undertaken a range of extensive measures to help keep students and teachers safe, including:

Promoting social distancing by doubling classroom sizes and expanding to a second campus in the 2020-21 school year
Working closely with local health officials on quarantine protocols and other issues
Requiring mask usage
Adding air purifiers to all classrooms and increasing ventilation and fresh air circulation
Implementing additional hand hygiene/sneeze education and protocols
Beginning the 2021-22 year with all-school testing event held on campus in partnership with Fruth Pharmacy
Partnering with Fruth to provide weekly on site staff testing
Promoting weekly random testing of student population
Strongly encouraging eligible students to be vaccinated, including presenting a vaccination event for children ages 5-11 on Nov. 12 in partnership with Fruth. MMS continues to urge parents to consult with their pediatricians about the COVID-19 vaccine and all health matters.
Staying closely connected with sustained and consistent school health updates, including videos and social media outreach

In addition, several MMS teachers, families and alumni promoted vaccination by participating in production of a community immunity PSA produced by the Center for Rural Health.

MMS Art to Remember

Handwriting, cursive at MMS

Handwriting is an important part of early education. Unfortunately, many schools have abandoned explicit handwriting instruction due to time constraints and a belief that handwriting/work with pencil and paper is not as important as it once was in our society.

A number of scientific studies point to the importance of handwriting, including this one which concluded that handwriting (as opposed to typing or tracing) guides preliterate children toward developing reading skills. This article highlights five of the important reasons we should not allow direct instruction in this area to go by the wayside . Not only does learning handwriting early help children develop skills needed for reading, evidence suggests it makes children better writers, spellers, and leads them towards future success in academics. When children are able to write fluently with proper and consistent letter formation, they are free to complete big work without having to stop and think about how to write the letters.

In Montessori schools, handwriting is a critical component of children’s learning. As with so many other skills, our curriculum takes a spiraling approach, indirectly preparing children prior to direct instruction. Very young children develop the muscles necessary for a pincer grasp while they manipulate materials such as the knobbed cylinders, a Montessori favorite!

There are two other important materials in the Primary classroom that facilitate handwriting readiness: the metal insets and the sandpaper letters. The metal insets are wooden trays that hold a series of stencil-like shapes. Removable shapes are blue with a pink background. Some shapes have straight-lined sides while others are curved. Children trace the shapes with a pencil, giving their hands a chance to practice creating a variety of lines. Increasingly challenging activities encourage children to create different patterns with colored pencils while staying inside the original traced lines. At first glance, this may appear to be a fun art activity but its main intention is to prepare children for their upcoming work in handwriting.

Montessori sandpaper letters take the work a step further. Twenty-six wooden tiles are adorned with gritty, sand-textured letters of the alphabet. Children are given lessons on how to trace these letters with their fingers and say the sound. (As a side note, Montessori children are taught the sound of each letter in conjunction with its name, which makes much more sense for reading preparation.)

Once children enter the elementary years in a Montessori school, they are required to write throughout the day. Typically, children work throughout the morning work period on a largely independent basis, unless they are receiving a direct, small-group lesson from the guide. During this independent work they record parts of their work in notebooks. Children also record their goals for the day in writing.

As part of our multi-year curriculum alignment work, we have identified end of level outcomes specific to handwriting. At MMS, Primary children are given direct instruction with manuscript (print) letters, starting with lowercase and moving into uppercase before the child transitions to Elementary. In Lower Elementary, the first-year students spend time fine-tuning the manuscript letter formations, and then move into cursive writing. By the time the children complete the third year of Lower Elementary, we expect that they will have mastered the formation of all cursive letters, lowercase and uppercase. When the children enter Upper Elementary, they spend some time fine-tuning cursive writing before learning keyboarding skills. When students leave Upper Elementary and transition to Middle School, we expect that they will be able to use manuscript writing, cursive writing, and keyboarding for written expression.

What was your time at MMS like?

MMS fostered a sense of creative freedom and intellectual curiosity. When I was at school, I felt encouraged to pursue my interests and engage meaningfully in the things that interested me. My teachers always seemed to guide my interests, helping me to focus my inquisitiveness while developing a well-rounded set of skills and knowledge. Never was there a day where I felt bored or stifled. And that academic engagement took place in a welcoming environment, where I learned with and beside people who were different from me. Overall, MMS was the type of environment that you wish you could take with you throughout your life’s pursuits.

What impact did your Montessori experience have on your subsequent education and career path?

At MMS, I was encouraged to pursue wide-ranging academic interests and follow my intellectual curiosities. Allowed to engage freely in the study of varying topics, I learned how to draw connections and identify points of intersection. Time and again, I returned to the well of that connection-drawing that I developed through the Montessori experience. It was the academic freedom at MMS that permitted me to forge my own process of critical assessment. And at every stage of my academic and professional pursuits, I have continued to successfully implement that process. I am grateful for the opportunities to pave a path of academic independence afforded to me by MMS.

MMS nurtures the values and skills that the world needs now. Which is important to you?

Although MMS helped me become a responsible, empathetic, and creative member of my community, the critical thinking skills I honed at MMS have left a lasting impact on my academic and professional pursuits. Not limited by a predetermined boundary of intellectual development, MMS allowed me to critically engage with questions and topics that I may have otherwise not had the opportunity to explore. For instance, during my time in lower elementary, I developed interest in classic mechanics. Using the materials and support available at MMS, I pursued that interest years before I would have in a more regimented and standardized learning environment. Such opportunities were frequent and enabled me to think analytically about topics and subjects based on my own intrigue.

Any favorite “Montessori Moment” from your time at MMS?

In Upper Elementary, two of my friends and I had learned about early Greek philosophers and their schools of thought. We took an interest in the subject, and after studying more, we had the idea to write a short skit with my friends playing Socrates and Aristotle, respective, and me playing Plato. The skit played upon the philosophical differences between those three influential thinkers. I vividly recall writing the skit, donning our home-made togas to perform our piece. Such an exercise would never have been possible without the academic freedom of MMS and the supportive approach of the MMS teachers and staff.

Education info/career/personal highlights:

After graduating manga cum laude from Georgetown University and obtaining my J.D., Order of the Coif, from Washington and Lee School of Law, I returned home to West Virginia. I clerked for Judge Robert C. Chambers, District Court Judge for the Southern District of West Virginia, and Judge Robert B. King of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. I now am an attorney in Charleston, representing all matter of clients in litigation and transactional matters.

Why did you choose Montessori for your family?

We chose Mountaineer Montessori because they were highly recommended in the community for their unique style of teaching. I was aware of how successful other children were in school and how excited they were to learn. So, when we moved to Kanawha City it was a must. We viewed a classroom full of young children intently working (learning) and moving throughout with purpose. We were very intrigued and have called Montessori home for seven years.

What makes MMS special to you?

MMS is special to us because our children love their school. They are excited to go each morning and return with excitement on what the day presented. There is more than general academics being taught; the whole child is being developed and that is special. The smile on all the children’s faces warms the soul and makes you feel you have made a great choice.

What do your children like best about MMS?

I believe they like best the family atmosphere and love and they receive from every single person at Montessori. They are respected and treated like equals and taught to respect others the same. It fosters a safe and rewarding environment.

MMS nurtures the qualities and skills needed today more than ever. Which are these important to you and how to you see MMS developing them in your child?

Community and responsibility. Montessori focuses on both. We have observed our children learn responsibility early with their work environment, their daily chores, and peers. This responsibility is part of the classroom and school community. As they grow, we see it move from the classroom to each community they are a part of. Taking responsibility for yourself and the community around you can only lead to better outcomes.

Any favorite “Montessori Moment” from over the years?

Primary pin punching. It’s a great amount of work to punch out each state or country. Our daughter worked very hard and had chapped lips for weeks from concentration.

As parents we enjoy the annual gala. Each year there is a class project the children work on and is auctioned off. We enjoy seeing all the wonderful creations that are made and raising money for the kids.

Why did you choose Montessori for your family?

Small classrooms and individualized instruction, inclusion and integration of students with a wide range of abilities, and diversity of the student body drew us to MMS. After our children visited for the day their excitement for learning and moving to West Virginia was noticeable, they couldn’t wait to get here and settle in.

What makes MMS special to you as an educator?

As an educator I am appreciative of the high level of focus on professional development for staff. I am excited to be in a community where my learning and growth is also important. When working in my classroom we are conscious of meeting the students where their skills are and moving forward, this is something a lot of schools talk about but MMS actually internalizes in our approach.

What do your children like best about MMS?

Our children enjoy the freedom to explore topics of interest and share their enthusiasm for learning openly. They are curious about the world around them and are happy to come to school each day in an environment where that is respected and supported by all.

What was it like coming to the school as a new family?

We were new to West Virginia as well as MMS, so there were a lot of adjustments to be made. The children fell in love with MMS last year, and when I was asked to come on board as a faculty member I couldn’t have been more excited.

CREATIVITY! MMS offers opportunities for students to explore their musical and artistic interests in specialized classes as well as through integration in the general classroom. It is wonderful to see a wide variety of forms of expression supported and explored by adults and children alike, creative expression is truly a part of the culture of MMS.

What is your hope for our students?

My hope is that every child feels safe in learning and carries the innate drive to learn forward with them throughout their lives. I have a strong belief that every individual can learn, grow, and progress in their own way and I wish for my students to leave my charge with a motivation to learn and grown throughout their lives with the confidence and courage.

What makes MMS special to you?

What makes MMS special is that the students don’t have to sit at a desk all day like other schools. Everybody doesn’t have to learn the same thing at the same time. I get to learn at my own pace and work with physical materials instead of worksheets. Working with other students helps accomplish things faster and helps me to understand things better. The small school size means there is more attention from the teachers than I would get in a bigger school. It feels like the teachers really care about us.

What do you like best at MMS?

I like the kindness of the students, the teachers, and administrators. I enjoy the physical activity and education we receive. Some of the writing prompts we get are really fun.

MMS nurtures the qualities and skills needed today more than ever. Which are important to you?

Kindness because a lot more people will like you. Creativity because you can come up with things other people would think of. Cooperation because you can get more things done.

I really enjoyed going to the Hurricane wave pool during Campessori! It was one of the best experiences ever. The giant slides were wonderful. The slides were a bunch of colors and I loved going up and down the slides.

Why did you choose Montessori for your family?

We heard about the Montessori method being a completely different approach to education from conventional schools and we were intrigued. We started reading about the Montessori method and watching YouTube some videos about it and it seemed to make a lot of sense. I knew my coworker was sending her son to MMS so I started asking her about her experience and it all sounded super exciting and interesting. However, we weren’t sure we were going to be able to afford private schools, so we almost dropped the idea. Luckily, we decided to contact MMS to learn more about the school and take the tour to see if we even liked it. Well, once you take the tour it’s hard not love it and want it for your kids! It turned out that MMS had financial options that allowed us to become an MMS family and we are super grateful for this. A big shout out to all the MMS families that support the school’s annual fundraising!

In the beginning after we became an MMS family, we still had a lot of questions about how the method works! You just have to believe, sit back and watch and be amazed. Lucia is on her second year of Lower Elementary and our son Oliver is on his second year of Primary. We look forward for Sammy to start next year!

What makes MMS special to you?

We get a lot of peace of mind knowing that we are providing the best education to our kids. An education approach that is not only teaching them information but helping them be curious and creative and respectful of other people and the environment. In addition, MMS has helped us find the path to the Positive Discipline approach through their parent education opportunities and it has been a guiding light for us as we go through the never-ending struggle of trying our best as parents.

What do your children like best about MMS?

We think they love the diverse variety of interesting materials in the classroom, the art room and even the Plus room. I think they enjoy their freedom within limits. They loved being able to move around through the school and not being limited at the playground for wanting to climb!

Our kids may not fully comprehend how lucky they are to be in a positive respectful environment that promotes the love of learning and the freedom to be creative because MMS is the only thing they have experienced, but they are learning and they are happy.

MMS nurtures the qualities and skills needed today more than ever. Which are important to you and how do you see MMS developing them in your child?

For us kindness and leadership are particularly important. We want our kids to be kind to others and their environment and to help through positive leadership. In our opinion awareness, empathy and respect are the foundation for both kindness and leadership.

Any favorite “Montessori Moment” from over the years?

It’s hard to pick one. We remember one day that Susie said that she had never seen a 3-year-old climb down the playground equipment pole. We do remember the first time Lucia went down it. She was a bit terrified. She was neither pressured not discouraged to do it. She was simply allowed to give it a try if she was ready. That is to us what the Montessori method is all about.

This is Amanda Fields’s MMS story:

Why did you choose Montessori for your family?

I had been researching activities to do with my oldest son when he was a baby and all the activities that I found that were appealing to me happened to be based on Montessori ideas. We decided to go to an open house at MMS to learn about the school. Once we were there, we were so impressed with the teachers, the materials, and especially the students. The maturity and interpersonal skills shown by the upper elementary students who were guiding us during the open house were beyond anything we would have expected for kids that age. Also, when we observed a primary classroom in action, the ability of the children to focus and work together peacefully and cooperatively was very impressive. We knew we had come to the right place and that this was precisely the environment we wanted our children to be in.

What makes Mountaineer Montessori special to you?

The approach of incorporating all the elements of the environment into the learning experience is what makes Montessori special. The idea of looking beyond learning to read, write and mathematics as a sole objective, but rather making use of the same as it relates to everyday life is what renders the Montessori approach a very special one. We also appreciate that the teaching methods at Mountaineer Montessori consider the developmental stages of the child, as well as their unique interests and abilities.

What do you sons like most about their school?

In all honesty, there is nothing that either of our two boys dislike about their school. If anything they look forward to going to school and in so many ways we can see that school is no longer a task, but rather a part of their life. They enjoy the outdoor activities, swimming, and school trips, in addition to interacting with Montessori friends and teachers. But most important of all, they enjoy the sense of belonging and being part of a team.

Do you have a special “Montessori moment” or memory?

When Zach and Rayan were in their first primary year, watching them perform on stage during the holiday season was very memorable for us. We can’t wait for more moments as they continue to advance and once their twin brothers start on the same journey in the near future.

How do you think Montessori prepares students for success in the 21st century?

We strongly believe that MMS and its approach to education are integral when it comes to preparing students for the 21st century. The curriculum emphasizes and fosters concepts and skills such as collaboration with peers, critical thinking, innovation, creativity, and problem solving, as well as peaceful communication and respect for others. These are exactly the skills that our children will need to flourish in adulthood and career-wise.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “Spreading Our Wings.” Can you think of a way Montessori lifts up your children and helps them “fly?”

We love that our children’s education is in the hands of professionals who truly care about them, their well-being, and their future. They understand child development and behavior. Our children are encouraged to learn in ways that work for them and are supported in learning when they are truly developmentally ready to learn various concepts with a highly individualized curriculum. This allows our boys to expand upon their strengths as well as develop and grow in areas that are more challenging. Our goal is for our boys to reach their utmost potential, spread their wings and fly to whatever heights they aspire to. With MMS, we feel we are giving them the best foundation possible.

This is Beth George’s story. Beth is the MMS Assistant Director and parent of three alumnae.

How did your MMS story begin?

My MMS story actually started before I had any children. In February of 1992 I had to come to some school I never heard of for Shadow Night (whatever that was) to shadow my niece. I could not believe my eyes. The children were carrying trays so slowly and carefully. They were doing work quietly and happily. That night was magical and I knew then that my children would be coming to MMS.

What impact has MMS had on your family?

MMS helped my children become independent members of society, and MMS showed me ways I could help. All three of my daughters had Kathryn (Rhoads) as a teacher, and I would come to every parent meeting to soak up what I could do at home that would help my children be independent. I put plates and cups in lower cabinets so my children could set the table or get a drink on their own. Although it was hard I let my children pick out their clothes and fix their own hair. This was the start of their independence and it was a signal to me that I didn’t have to control everything. I realized that my job was to teach them to be independent.

Our theme this year is “Epic Education.” Can you share a few examples of some “epic” experiences for you and your children?

I would say one epic experience would be MMS helping one of my daughters, who didn’t like to read at all, become a bookworm. My daughter was in Upper Elementary and was having a terrible time with novel study. She just didn’t like to read. With patience and the help of her teacher, my daughter began her reading journey. She is still on that journey enjoying reading several books at a time.

Another important moment was hearing that my daughter stood up for someone. Through MMS, my children learned about community and what it meant to be a friend. MMS helped my children gain confidence to stand up for themselves, for others, and for what is right.

Do you have a favorite Montessori moment?

My favorite Montessori moment came when I was teaching coding in computer class. One of my fourth year students was having trouble with a particular problem. He tended to give up easily, but I kept encouraging him. Then I heard a loud “I did it.” I’ll never forget the look on his face. He was so proud of himself.

Favorite Montessori quote:

“The greatest gifts we can give our children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence.”

What is your hope for today’s students?

I hope our students realize that MMS is a special place. They can be themselves, study in depth in areas they are interested, learn to be leaders, learn to listen, and learn to work cooperatively. I hope their passion, joy, and love of learning continues to grow. No matter how young or how old I hope they always have smiles on their faces as they walk through our doors.

This is the Head family’s story:

Why did you choose Montessori for your family?

After extensive research, we chose Montessori for many reasons. We love the self-directed activity, hands-on learning, and freedom to explore at an individual pace. Children learn through all five senses both in the classroom and outdoors. Children naturally listen to their peers, so the mixed age classroom fosters learning when they strive to reach new goals and reinforces concepts through teaching each other. We are confident we made the right decision because our son has had the opportunity to advance within the curriculum, develop leadership skills, and build independence.

What makes MMS special to you?

Since beginning MMS at age 3, our son has remained genuinely excited to attend school every day. We are grateful a strong foundation and early love of learning has been established. He is respected and valued at MMS, which has directly impacted his confidence and self-esteem. His growth is fostered in all areas – socially, emotionally, intellectually. We appreciate being part of a community at MMS and have benefited from classes offered to parents.

What does your family like best about MMS?

We love the peaceful environment and passionate staff! They go above and beyond to create an environment with unique and creative activities. I am always amazed at the calm, productive vibe as you enter MMS. We are partners with the guides and are grateful for their care and open communication – especially if our son has a difficult day. It is helpful that they offer an after-school program and summer camp for year-round consistency.

What do you and/or Arthur think is “epic” about MMS?

Arthur loves “doing work, playing outside, and snack time.” We agree and think it’s “EPIC” that he eats such healthy snacks at MMS. We had no idea he loved cauliflower! Haha.

Any favorite “Montessori Moment” thus far?

One of our favorite “Montessori Moments” is the day Arthur came home with 10 large butterflies that he had made for a special art project. He was so proud of each unique and beautiful piece! How wonderful that he was given the freedom to create to his heart’s content! We displayed his paintings in our home and then he chose butterflies to give to family members as treasured gifts.

Any notable experience as a “new” MMS family?

We enjoyed the meet-up opportunities over the summer to connect with friends outside of school and meet other parents. We even hosted one at Kanawha State Forest and had a great time exploring! Getting involved through various opportunities has enriched our experience and it shows Arthur we are invested in his education.

This is the Fiorelli family’s story:

Why did you choose Montessori for your family?

Abbey Fiorelli, with AJ Fiorelli and Emmy (Primary), Noelle (Lower Elementary) and Dylan (Upper Elementary)

I come from a background in Montessori. My mom is a long-time Montessori educator and I was fortunate enough to have both pre-primary and primary Montessori schooling. Montessori isn’t just education for our family, it is a way of life. I grew up in a household that was built around Montessori values and I strive to instill those values in my children as well. Teaching a love of lifetime learning and exploration is very important to us, and we know that a Montessori education will give our children the skills to not only achieve their educational goals but also thrive in their communities.

What makes MMS special to you?

We love the sense of community that comes with MMS. As transplants to the Charleston area, we didn’t have any local family or a built-in friend network to support us. We were welcomed into the MMS community with open arms and have built a strong network of friends and teachers who help support our children each day. We take comfort in knowing that our children at well cared for during the school day and we love the community mentality of the parents which allows us to lean on each other as our lives get busy. The families at the school have become extensions of our own families and we enjoy sharing our thriving community with them.

What do your children like best about school?

I have found that this year, more than any other, our children are embracing the challenge of learning new things. They each come home each day excited to share the new skills they are gaining in the classroom and can’t wait to tell us about their achievements each day. They truly have a love for learning and a passion for sharing their skills with others in the classroom.

What do you and/or your child find to be “epic” about MMS?

We find the idea that our children are learning to be leaders and listeners as they navigate new challenges at MMS to be epic. Success in relationships and careers are based on the ability to listen and lead with grace, compassion, and strength. Our children are learning these skills each day as they navigate communication, respect, leadership, and problem-solving in the classroom. We know that the skills they are learning at MMS shape every aspect of their lives—and that is epic education.

Any favorite “Montessori moment” from over the years?

I think my favorite Montessori moment is watching each child bring home their planisphere work from Primary. This is something I remember from my Primary years and I love the sense of pride that each child takes as they bring home this work. A lot of time and concentration are invested in completing this activity and I have distinct memories of each child proudly toting their rolled-up planisphere home and being eager to share their hard work with us.

Faculty Focus: Darlene Spangler

As part of our Montessori Education Week activities, MMS is spotlighting some of the experienced and dedicated staff members who have built our tradition of excellence and innovation in education over the past 43 years. We are proud to highlight their contributions to our school over the years and their hopes for today’s students.

Darlene Spangler has played many important roles during her time at MMS, including teacher, administrator, sixth year project leader and specialist. She holds a B.A. in English from Duke University and is currently a learning specialist, providing specialized reading screening and instruction to elementary students. Previously, Darlene spent 14 years as an assistant teacher in Upper Elementary (concurrently teaching English in our Middle School program for five years). She also served as our school’s assistant administrator for 13 years and interim co-director for three years. Originally from the eastern shore of Maryland, Darlene settled in her husband’s hometown of Charleston, where they raised two (now adult) children. In her free time, she enjoys playing tennis, reading, and traveling

Favorite Montessori quote and why?

“What the hand does, the mind remembers.” Concrete materials make concepts real and more easily internalized.

“He does it with his hands, by experience, first in play and then through work. The hands are the instruments of man’s intelligence.” (Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind)

Describe Montessori in three words:

Peace, respect, responsibility

Highlights of your time at MMS?The 14 years I spent in the upper elementary classroom with Mary McKown were the highlight of my time at MMS. Mary was the best teacher I have encountered at any level. She inspired the students to do their best and instilled an incredible love of learning in each of them. She taught me everything I know about Montessori.

Number of years at MMS?

Finishing my twenty-third year.

Favorite Montessori Moment?

Two come to mind:

When I was teaching Montessori Middle School English in the early 2000’s I took my class to see the play Hamlet. In the middle of the play, a student turned to me, laid her hand on my knee and said, “Thank you for bringing me to see this.” I was responsible for a student’s first exposure to Shakespeare and I was as excited as she was about it!

We once had a parent volunteer teaching basic calculus lessons after school to any interested upper elementary students. One day I took a phone message from a parent saying their child could stay after school for the lessons. Upon delivering the message to the student, she squealed in excitement to her friends, “I get to stay after school and go to calculus!” I’ve told this story many times and concluded that only at Montessori does a student get excited about staying after school AND studying calculus!

What do you hope your students will take away from their time at MMS?

I hope my students leave MMS with a love for learning as great as mine!

Anything else?

I hope all students leave MMS with a respect for others and a sense of responsibility for their own education.

Faculty Focus: Julie Margolis

Julie Margolis has been at the heart of MMS for more than 20 years, serving our school in many key roles, including teacher, administrator and specialist. She earned a B.S. in education from the University of Vermont , and a M.S. from Penn State University . Her Montessori training is through the Virginia Center for Montessori Studies and the Cincinnati Montessori Secondary Teacher Education Program . Julie has returned to the classroom this year as a Middle School specialist, teaching advanced mathematics and physic education. She also provides invaluable guidance on school management issues and oversees our financial aid program, which was created during her three years as MMS Co-Director. A native of Vermont, she is a former public school teacher and a former computer programmer. Julie and her late husband, Jay, raised their four children in Charleston, two of whom are MMS alumni. Her personal interests include hiking, skiing, reading, and traveling to visit her family.

Favorite Montessori quote and why?

“The child is truly a miraculous being, and this should be felt deeply by the educator.”

It’s quite difficult to select a favorite quote, as Maria Montessori was a profound and prolific writer/educator. This quote touched me because it represents the idea that time with a student is indeed a precious time. To be part of a child’s daily interactions, to have the opportunity to guide the child’s growth and education is not only an honor, but a solemn responsibility to understand and influence the child in respectful and kind ways. The child is a miracle of nature and we can stand in awe. I learn every day from my students, and I hope they learn from me!

Describe Montessori in three words:

Respectful, humane, engaging

Highlights of your time at MMS?

Beginning as a parent, and a few years later becoming a teacher, I didn’t know how long I’d work at the school. What I realized as my children aged out of the school is that it’s a special community of learners. It’s grown on me. It’s hard to pick highlights…it was wonderful to have my own children here, but that ended about 20 years ago! Working with amazing people, families and students has been the highlight.

Favorite Montessori moment?

My favorite moments, which may seem trite, are the “aha” moments when a child finally “gets” something they’ve worked hard to understand or do. The smile and wonder in their faces, the spine a little straighter, the shoulders held confidently, those are the treasured moments. It’s honestly what keeps teachers teaching. It’s a treasure to behold!

What do you hope your students will take away from their time at MMS?

I certainly hope that respect for others and honoring differences and diversity among people is one key take away. I hope they feel strong inside to stand up for themselves and others when they see wrongs in the world. I hope they are kind and understanding of others. I hope they’ve found confidence in themselves that they can learn and tackle the challenges ahead, that they can ask questions and seek the help they need, that they are willing to make mistakes and learn from them, try new things, and that they stay close to their parents and families throughout their lives.

Faculty Focus: Jennifer Carriger

Jennifer Carriger, now in her tenth year at MMS, brings extensive experience as a teacher in public and independent school settings, educational leadership and non-profit management to her position as our school director.

Jennifer received a B.A. in international studies, a B.S. in secondary education and a M.S. in special education from West Virginia University and has pursued additional graduate studies in education at Marshall University and the University of Virginia. She holds permanent WV certification endorsement for students ages 5-12 in social studies, learning disabilities, mental impairment and behavior disorders.

Jennifer is the only educator in West Virginia to be certified as an AMS Montessori Administrator. She was awarded this credential after completion of a two-year program at the Center for Montessori Education in New York. Jennnifer received additional Montessori training through the Virginia Center for Montessori Studies and completed NAMTA Montessori Whole School Management (Level I) training.

In June 2018, Jennifer was selected for the prestigious WVU Consortium for Faculty and Course Development in International Studies program in Mexico.

In addition to her administrative responsibilities, Jennifer leads our Student Support Team as our learning consultant.Jennifer co-founded the Appalachian Reading Center in 2004 and is certified in the Wilson Reading System with additional training in Handwriting Without Tears. Jennifer is also a past president of the West Virginia Learning Disabilities Association. She taught in the public school system for nine years at the elementary, middle and high school levels in Madison County, Va., and Boone County, W.Va. In 2014, Jennifer was honored as West Virginia Teacher of the Year by the WVLDA. She and her husband, David, are the parents of two Mountaineer Montessori alumni.

Favorite Montessori quote and why?

“One test of the correctness of educational procedure is the happiness of the child.”

Throughout my day, I have the chance to observe children and adults working in harmony together throughout the school. I see the students run into the building, eager to start the day – sometimes returning to work from the previous day, sometimes ready to share a new discovery or idea, always entering the classroom ready to absorb new experiences and lessons. These children are happy. They embody a love of learning and are thrilled to share their knowledge and questions with others. This is true of the youngest student of three years old and the oldest of fourteen years – and is true of the MMS staff as well.

Joy, connection, respect

Highlights of your time at MMS?

This is my tenth year at MMS. My first six years were spent as the school’s reading and learning specialist. During that time, I worked with individual students and small groups to provide additional lessons in reading, spelling, handwriting and math. From the start, I immediately appreciated the non-competitive nature of Montessori and MMS, and noticed that children who struggle in some academic areas were able to shine in others, and that at a Montessori school, the child is respected as a whole person. A highlight of my time in the specialist role is having the opportunity to learn more about Montessori philosophy so I could weave my work into the bigger picture of the school’s mission.

Another highlight of my time at MMS is having the opportunity to watch my own children learn and grow in a Montessori environment. I especially appreciate their having had leadership opportunities, time to explore interests, a wide variety of field trips/field experiences, and the chance to practice kindness.

As an administrator, highlights include meeting and getting to know our wonderful families (car line is one of my favorite parts of the day), working with our incredible staff, having the chance to ‘spread the word’ about Montessori through tours and special events, learning from mentors from all over the country through my AMS Administrator certification program at Center for Montessori Education/New York, and of course, being serenaded by our elementary students on my birthday/Race for Education this year!

Favorite Montessori moment?

My favorite Montessori Moments are the little bits of conversation I overhear during my movement through the school – children helping and encouraging each other, adults providing guidance toward independence, children asking for and seeking more knowledge. I am also thrilled and honored when children share their excitement with me, such as when a lower elementary student burst out of the classroom recently to tell me he had JUST CONSTRUCTED A COMPLETE CIRCUIT!

What do you hope your students will take away from their time at MMS?

I hope our students maintain their love of learning throughout their lives, and that they keep asking questions and seeking to understand. My wish is that they take the Montessori peace philosophy of kindness and respect wherever they go in the years ahead.

This is Karen Kelly’s story:

When did your MMS story begin?

In 1996, my son started at MMS in the Primary Program. I was involved in the school as a parent, reading to the children and caring for the school’s pets. In 1999, I joined MMS as an assistant in the Lower Elementary class. Although I loved my former career as a veterinary technician, MMS gives me the opportunity to hopefully make a difference in the life of a child by encouraging a passion for learning and an appreciation and ability for compassion and tolerance.

What is your role at MMS?

I am director of the MMS after-school Plus Program. I also teach zoology, botany and knitting. I am an expert splinter-extractor, caretaker of the school pets, and love telling the students stories of my childhood.

What impact has MMS made on your family?

The main goal I had for enrolling my son at MMS was to encourage his love of learning (Robert went all the way through Middle School at MMS.) He recently graduated with a master’s degree in history and continues to explore his passion for that subject as an historian at the Craik-Patton House. MMS has been the catalyst for decades-long friendships with the families and staff that we have met.

What makes MMS special to you?

MMS really is a family. We care about each other in a way that I have never experienced anywhere else that I have ever worked or attended school.

Do you have any favorite “Montessori moments?”

I have so many ‘Montessori’ moments, if not every day, at least once a week. Older children teaching younger ones how to play a game or going across the monkey bars on the playground. The look on a child’s face when we go to Kanawha State Forest and they catch a crawdad for the first time, or the pride and enthusiasm when an older child asks if they can read aloud at story time. But, one of my absolute favorite memories was when I brought orphaned kittens toschool for the children to care for. They were meticulous about measuring the formula, testing the temperature of the milk replacement, and feeding them. The tenderness, compassion and exquisite kindness that I saw took my breath away. (All the kittens were adopted by MMS families after they were weaned.)

What is your hope for our students?

I hope that my students develop a love of learning throughout their lives, compassion, responsibility, critical thinking, skills, patience, an appreciation of diversity, and a desire to make the world a better place for everyone.

Favorite Montessori quote?

“Within the child lies the fate of the future.”

Other thoughts:

I’ve always thought you can tell quite a bit about a person by their bookshelves. So, here are a few of my favorite children’s books: Yertle the Turtle and The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss, A Wrinkle in Time by M. L’Engle, The Hundred Dresses by E. Estes, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg, The Secret Garden by F.H. Burnett.

This is the Janell West’s MMS story:

When I was a teenager, my mom picked up a friend’s child from a Montessori school- I was impressed with the array of concrete learning materials, and the child’s confidence socially and academically. My husband has fond memories of his own Montessori education.

When one of our children seemed to need more than we could offer as homeschoolers, we immediately considered Montessori. A perusal of the the MMS website quickly endeared us to its philosophy and programs.

We enrolled our second grader, who immediately felt befriended and needed as an important part of the school community. The individually driven and paced environment, created by the kind and enthusiastic staff, eliminated frustration and encouraged her to explore her interests at her pace and comfort level. She receives extra reading help through the Wilson program; we are so pleased with her progress. The art program at MMS has given her wings to fly, where her drawing abilities blossom, and her creativity delights us.

We soon realized our first grader needed the MMS experience too. Despite her late enrollment, the exceptional staff and students swept her into the school community; again, the student driven pacing and intriguing activity choices were just what she needed to blossom. Soon she was involved in a class play that showcased her hitherto unknown ability to memorize lines, which she delivered with panache!

Our middle schooler soon became envious of the exceptional education her younger siblings received. As we looked into MM Middle School, we realized it offered opportunities for our 8th grader to expand horizons. She craved a more challenging and diverse experience. The Middle School staff are exceptionally credentialled and overflowing with productive and intriguing curriculum.

I love that my children’s teachers see each of them as a unique being, perched daily on the ledge of the learning experience, ready for guidance on how to spread their wings and fly to the adventure of their choosing.

This is David Victorson’s story:

What was your time like at MMS?

Every day at MMS felt like a new adventure and I remember waking up excited for the day’s new lessons. One of the primary reasons for this is that MMS is full of wonderful people – both faculty and students – who create a nurturing and respectful environment that encourages learning, exploration, and self-confidence.

What impact did your Montessori education have on your subsequent education and career path?

I believe my time at MMS helped to cement a life-long curiosity and love of learning. These qualities were especially helpful in college and graduate school, where I felt free to follow them to new and exciting subject matters, and could discover and test potential careers without fear or hesitation.

Do you have a favorite Montessori memory?

My favorite memory from MMS is as a kindergartner, eating honeysuckles that grew behind the school with my classmates. I was amazed to discover that their beauty, smell, texture, and flavor grew in nothing more than soil and water. I wasn’t in a classroom or a traditional learning environment, yet I was learning about nature, the food chain, and sustainability. As I look back, this memory fully encapsulates what makes MMS so great – every moment is an opportunity to learn and the teachers encouraged us to do so.

Why are MMS special to you?

MMS is a special place for my whole family. My sister and I both attended, and both loved our time as students. I think we were especially able to appreciate it after attending other schools and being exposed to other methods of education. The academic freedom that MMS provided was unlike anywhere else and allowed us to advance as quickly as we were ready, rather than being bound to a lesson plan designed without any specific individual in mind.

Career, education, personal highlights:

I earned a J.D. from Harvard Law School and currently work as a litigator in the Washington D.C. office of a large international law firm. Prior to joining the firm, I served as a judicial clerk for the Chief Judge of the Northern District of Ohio. Before attending law school I worked in the creative department of a Los Angeles film studio, working with writers and directors to develop scripts for production. I earned a B.A. in cinema-television production and an MFA in Motion Picture Producing from the University of Southern California.

Fund expansion of the early childhood program and enhance programs at all other levels. We have maintained a waiting list for Primary classes for several years.

This is Julianna Storm’s story:

How has your time at Montessori impacted you?

I have gone to Montessori my entire life. I have met so many great friends, teachers, and my family out on my own. Now being in the seventh grade, Montessori has impacted me a lot. It has taught me how to read, write, listen, and learn in an environment where I am able to express myself and be who I want to be. Montessori has showed me it is ok to ask questions and go deeper into what you already know.

Do you have a favorite subject or activity?

I would be lying if I told you I did not like all of the subject in Montessori, but there are a few that stick out to me the most. One of my top favorite classes would be music. I have loved the arts all of my life so being able to challenge myself and work towards my goals at school is a lot of fun. We are currently working on Ukulele with my lovely teacher Alasha. She has helped me read the ukulele, and help me improve what I already know.

Any special “Montessori moments” during your time at this school?

I have several memories that have helped me become a better person through this school. That is why I love Montessori so much. One of my favorite memories with this school was in primary. My mother had always told me how I chose the school I am at now. It was my first year here and I did not know anyone. I had fallen on the playground and a little girl asked if I was ok and helped me up. At that point I knew that it was destiny and I truly do belong at this school.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “Spreading Our Wings” can you think of a way that being at MMS had helped you fly?

This school has given me information that I will take on the rest of my life. I have learned how to be independent and use my questions as a way of teaching myself. One of the most important rules of Montessori is the “golden rule.” The rule is treat others the way you want to be treated. All of this is very important when first coming to a Montessori school. It has taught me a lot and I hope it will teach others.

What are your visions for the future? Do you have any goals you would like to pursue right now?

I have always dreamed of a career in the arts. All of the arts are beautiful and it makes me want to paint our city in it. I have many goals with school, home, and my future. One of my top goals right now is to focus on school and continue to be kind and loving to others. I would also like others to do the same and make our town a better place.

How do you see yourself in the community in the future? Do you plan on staying in Charleston?

I hope that when I get older, I care for others and the world we live in. I hope that I still stay in touch with all of my friends and teachers as they all help me grow in several ways. I hope to be helpful kind to everyone and all. I do plan on staying in Charleston for years to come. After I graduate, I want to explore the world and find my true self. After I have found everything I wanted to find, I hope to meet the love of my life and move back to Charleston to start a growing family.
